Verwood: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. Around Verwood, finding it before the motor turns usually means draining and a full flush on the spot. Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Verwood and Woodlands Common run, with diesel for the engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.
Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side behind one flap. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. The slip lives in that gap.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Verwood: how it takes place
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
On a drive off Manor Road before work, or in the car park at Swans on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.
The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.
A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on. Whether it happens in Dewlands Common or the middle of Verwood, it's the same few seconds.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Ebblake or a forecourt around Verwood.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.
- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Pokesdown, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank
Anywhere in Dorset the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.
- Not in a rush on the side of Ringwood Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.
- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.
If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Do not go on to step five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Verwood?
Short list, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted. Keep the ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs your pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.
Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Shell Verwood or somewhere else. At home in Verwood? So the vehicle stays where it is.
If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Verwood lies under 15 miles from the M27; there, use the next junction. A short hop across Verwood is a smaller job than a run towards Salisbury, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.
Verwood: what happens when we turn up
By Hillside Community First School, close to Verwood Library or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it. Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies determine the work and our price. That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.
Then the tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it's running smoothly.
Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
