AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Walton? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump starts drawing it. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits in Walton. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Walton: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a HP21 7 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance down Redwood Drive.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

On a forecourt around Walton, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. On the drive, the vehicle remains exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes. No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

It does not blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A motor topped up on a drive in Manor Park overnight and not started since is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Walton. Only in your tank, it stays the same. And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Walton

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco. Harm just comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Southcourt or the middle of Walton.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Anywhere in Buckinghamshire your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Walton?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it. It mostly occurs at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Turnfurlong Infant School the top-up is rushed. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive near Walton Road. One more version: dim light, the car park by The Millwrights, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it most. Same slip, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are in Walton or the rest of Buckinghamshire.

Walton: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It has been pulled through the filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps returning from Vale Park, or midway across Walton, the engine might run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or stall. When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without turning it on again to see. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M40, under 15 miles from Walton, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving for Milton Keynes, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Walton to the car park by Holy Trinity, Walton. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has ended up. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Walton?

The car remains put, whether that's a road beside Queens Park Arts Centre, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Walton, and the van comes to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has run, because those replies decide the work.

Then your tank is emptied where your car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash out unaided. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The final step is to bleed the system on new diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Aylesbury or on a drive in Walton. Our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel before we leave. No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Buckinghamshire, Walton included

Aylesbury, Victoria Park and California are among the towns near Walton that the same vans serve, together with much of Buckinghamshire beyond, over the HP postcode area. Near a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than assuming, and so phone.

Wherever the vehicle stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers empty it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Walton, a residential suburb, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Walton?

Because each callouts vary, a single figure wouldn't be honest. Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Aylesbury Crown Court.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each Walton call opens with precisely that, ahead of any quote, not afterwards. When those are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
