Washford: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens till your engine sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Washford, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Washford, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

  • Remove your keys, which prevents someone turning the electrics on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting TA23 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition the car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so keep it off.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Willow Grove.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

On a forecourt around Washford, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing inside an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Torre overnight and not started since counts as the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Once it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. A car left sitting around Washford with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Washford

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Q8. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether the car sits in Beggearn Huish or the heart of Washford, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside the tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, wherever your car has come to rest around Somerset.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Washford: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — can look the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts invite it. Usually it is not the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Old Cleeve Church of England First School the top-up is hurried. Someone tips the container in outside their house, right off Claydon Close, as the day ends. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by Washford Inn.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with both fuels — the vehicles people know the least. Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are around Washford or the rest of Somerset.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Washford?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Via your filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it has gone.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Washford or returning from Claydowns Covert. When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M5, under 15 miles from Washford, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Washford to the car park by St Mary's Church is a very different job from a run towards Cardiff, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. Lasting damage is very unusual if it's noticed early.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Washford

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road near Washford Memorial Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Washford, and our van travels to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and if your motor has run, because those answers decide the work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol. Testing the car comes last, once fresh diesel is added and your filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the fuel system is bled with fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking bay by the nearest station or a driveway around Washford, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off. Before we leave, our engineers confirm it is running properly with new diesel in. No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Washford?

Every job differs, and so not one single quote is fair. What changes the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Cleeve Abbey.

Ahead of any figure, not afterwards, every enquiry from Washford opens with three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. Their answers narrow a range right down to one figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
