Washgreen: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Around Washgreen, finding it before your motor turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many current diesels on the roads round Washgreen and Warmbrook carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together under one flap. Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Washgreen

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Wash Green before work, or in the car park at Royal Oak on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Washgreen or out in Wirksworth.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Washgreen

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Bolehill or a forecourt in Washgreen.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Cromford? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere across Derbyshire, follow this routine.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Queen Elizabeths Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Skip step five altogether.

Washgreen: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays off. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the The Co-operative or the Murco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump. Your own driveway in Washgreen is the place it stays.

Already run? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off. Washgreen sits under 10 miles from the M1; there, use the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Derby, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Washgreen.

Our arrival around Washgreen, and what takes place next

Outside Wirksworth Junior School, close to Wirksworth Museum & Association Shop or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Which fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide both work and quote. On the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is emptied. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary. The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
