Waterbarn: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's sucked through your lines — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Waterbarn. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.
Waterbarn, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away
Things to do:
- So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will know.
- Give us a postcode starting OL13 0, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.
Do not do these:
- Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your engine.
- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Brandwood Park.
- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.
The staff working at any Waterbarn filling station — the Shell among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of it was meant to travel through one.
It does not combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup takes its supply from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Stacksteads last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — though it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.
Once it's pulled in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Waterbarn leaves it worse. In the tank alone, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?
Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Hey Head or the centre of Waterbarn equally.
As with petrol, there's good news. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever across Lancashire the vehicle sits.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Waterbarn?
Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may look identical. No one means it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.
A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. The top-up is hurried outside Waterfoot Primary School, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. A driver tips the bottle in at home, right off Rakehead Lane, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark outside Rose n Bowl, the vehicle gets topped up by someone using that flap the first time.
The least familiar cars see it most — rentals, new ones, fleet ones, and the other car of a home with one of each fuels. An identical slip, same first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be in Waterbarn or the remainder of Lancashire.
AdBlue in your diesel tank around Waterbarn, and the motor started?
The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the filter and pipework.
Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each might appear, maybe midway across Waterbarn or coming back from Edgeside Park. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off instead of testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.
If you were on the M66, under 5 miles from Waterbarn, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.
Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Waterbarn to park beside Holy Trinity and a drive of under 15 miles towards Manchester are very distinct jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.
Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Caught soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.
Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Waterbarn: what it takes
A road by Bamboo Theatre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your car has stopped around Waterbarn, we travel to it. Three replies shape the job, so first our engineers ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, plus whether the motor has turned over.
On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, if your engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.
The last step is to bleed the system on clean diesel. Then we fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space at Walsden or a driveway in Waterbarn. The test before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Waterbarn?
Not one flat price would be honest, since each job is different. What changes the price is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St Nicholas with St John & St Michael.
For that in mind, each enquiry from Waterbarn begins with the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any quote. Those answers shrink a range right down to a single number.
The price is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
