Waterloo: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens until your motor sucks it round. In Waterloo, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Waterloo, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a NP4 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.
  • Even a short distance along Heol Waun is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

On a forecourt around Waterloo, whether it is the Texaco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the pump. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its supply from. A car filled on a driveway in Victoria Village overnight and not started since counts as the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting in Waterloo. Just in the tank, it stays the same. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and this issue is thinned fuel. Mixed into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless at that stage; running the engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Abersychan or the middle of Waterloo.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Torfaen the vehicle is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Waterloo

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A bottle bought while heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical story.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill is hurried outside the local primary school, because your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Commercial Road. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Globe Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere across Torfaen, Waterloo included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Waterloo: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through your filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Emlyn Park, say, or part way across Waterloo. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M4, under 10 miles from Waterloo, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Waterloo to park beside High Street Baptist Church and a drive of under 15 miles towards Newport are very different jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started. If it's caught soon, lasting damage is very rare.

Waterloo: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that's a road beside Garnsychan Partnership, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Waterloo, and the van travels to it. What got in, roughly the quantity, and if your engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after your tank is emptied, on the spot. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash away on its own. Testing the car follows last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step. You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Waterloo or in a bay outside Pontypool and New Inn. Before we leave, our engineers check it is running correctly with fresh diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue drains across Torfaen, Waterloo included

AdBlue call-outs around Waterloo are passed to teams that serve the towns near it — Talywain, Golynos plus Prospect Place — and much of Torfaen beyond, across NP postcodes. Near a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — your drive at home, a residential street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Waterloo, a residential suburb, well.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Waterloo

Not one single figure could be honest, because each job is different. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Garndiffaith Millennium Hall.

Which fluid went in, what quantity, and if it ran: each Waterloo call opens with precisely that, before any quote, never afterwards. When they are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
