Waterside: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble begins once it's pulled through your lines — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Waterside. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
What to do straight away, Waterside: AdBlue in the diesel tank
Things to do:
- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
- Give us a postcode starting HP5 1, or whichever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call wherever you stand.
Things not to do:
- Moving your car even a short way is no reason to start your motor.
- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's pointless.
- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Inkerman Terrace.
- By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.
Moving your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Waterside forecourt you're on, the Esso included. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.
AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. Kept in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.
It doesn't combine. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from. A vehicle topped up on a drive in The Broadway yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the motor turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.
From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning in Waterside leaves things worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing. Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse
Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the main problem. No harm is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.
AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your car is in Pednormead End or the heart of Waterside, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.
The same good news holds as with petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Buckinghamshire the car is sitting.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Waterside?
After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.
The ways it happens are few and familiar. Hurrying, outside Waterside Primary Academy, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Waterside. Or a driver new to that flap tops up the car after dark, parked in the car park outside The Pheasant.
Rented vehicles, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it most. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Waterside or the remainder of Buckinghamshire you happen to be.
Waterside: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Then the AdBlue has left the tank. It's been drawn through your filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.
Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Christmas Tree Farm, say, or part way across Waterside. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.
On the M25, under 10 miles from Waterside, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.
Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so driving towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, gives a much bigger job than crossing Waterside to the car park by Christ Church. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
Once the motor has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. When it is caught early, permanent damage is very rare.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Waterside?
Wherever it has come to rest around Waterside — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street by Chesham Moor Gym and Swim — our van travels to your car. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has been run, because those replies determine the work.
The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed right through because residue won't wash away unaided. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.
Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end. You set off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Waterside or in a space at Amersham. It is checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs properly before we head off. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Waterside
Not one single figure could be fair, because every job differs. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Benjamin Grove Memorial.
That is why each call from Waterside starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. When those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.
The quote is given on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
