Weaste: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

Has your motor turned over since the AdBlue got in? That single question decides almost everything else from here. Wherever your car is — Little Bolton, Weaste — never start an engine that hasn't run yet. Ring 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and engine still off. In Weaste, that is generally drained and flushed where it stands. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. A larger job, yes, yet the same opening step.

Wherever across Greater Manchester it took place, one of the situations below matches yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Weaste forecourt

You're at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Somewhere around Weaste, then — Shell, BP, or anywhere else close by.

The point: of all places to notice, the forecourt is the best. No pump has pulled it in, so the AdBlue sits just in that tank.

What to do: do not get back in and crank it to clear the petrol pump. Get the attendants to help rolling it to a space, save the bottle, then ring us from there. If it can't be shifted, it can be drained at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt.

Weaste, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. Bought a bottle, tipped it in outside the house, binned the empty — and at that point looked at the cap again, too late. It takes place on driveways just off Mode Wheel Road South as regularly as anywhere.

In short: if your car hasn't moved since, it's nearly as good as finding out at the pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so nobody moves the car in the morning. Then call. We drain the car on your driveway, whether that's in Weaste or out in Seedley. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a residential street.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Weaste

On the road in Weaste with AdBlue in a diesel

Lumpy running, smoke, falling power or a glowing dashboard started a mile or two after the top-up. Bute Street, say, or the way towards Salford — a trip of under a mile.

What it means: your fuel system has pulled the AdBlue in. Distance sets how deep it goes: filter and lines first, then the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Next: find a safe place, stop, then turn the engine off. Weaste sits under a mile from the M602; there, pull off at the first junction instead of pressing on to the services. No trial restarts: clearing isn't something AdBlue will do. Tell us know the distance driven when you ring.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

You've had this vehicle barely a week. On your own car, AdBlue is missing or elsewhere. On this one, the cap is right by your diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Across Greater Manchester, nobody is safe from it.

Meaning? Whichever applies above counts too — run or not — and one further stage. The owner frequently needs to approve the work, under plenty of hire and company agreements.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our engineers get there than after. Leave the vehicle switched off as the reply arrives, even if you are parked outside Eccles or close to Saint Lukes Church.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, in Weaste

At times, "I think so" is the most you can honestly say. Lighter, that bottle; a trace of ammonia round your filler; a hazy recollection of the cap. Sound familiar? Maybe it happened in a hurry at the school gates at Willow Tree Primary School, or on a friend's drive in Pendleton.

Put simply: a spill round the filler leaves the engine no harm. A diesel tank with AdBlue inside is a different matter. You can't tell which by turning the key, and doing so would pull in any AdBlue that is in that tank.

Next: act as though it went in, then keep your motor off. Checking a tank that turns out free of AdBlue is better than emptying one once it has been run — so ring then describe to us what you saw.

Weaste: what each AdBlue drain has in common

Whatever the situation, one opening is used. Three things come once our engineers arrive — on a forecourt, a drive, a road beside Studio4 or the car park outside Coach and Horses: the liquid, the amount, and if the motor has run. Those replies decide the work, and you hear the quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

A thorough flush follows the drain. With petrol it's routine; with AdBlue it is essential, because crystals build up and certain metals corrode, and neither washes out unaided. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed or replaced, and the car is then tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

The last step is firing it up. Our engineers check it runs properly on clean diesel before we go. Lasting damage is very rare if it is noticed early, and the entire job is done where the car is. Nothing is taken upfront, payment happens on the day, and you receive what your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of policies include misfuelling, and so check yours as we head over.
