AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Well End? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's sucked through your pump — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Well End, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

Well End, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we can see.
  • Give us a postcode starting WD6 5, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance down Well End Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, don't try draining it yourself.

The attendants working at any Well End forecourt — the Shell included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go that way.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Ridge overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's sucked in, the harm takes two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a car sitting around Well End. Only inside your tank, it stays stable. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of harm.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. Whether your vehicle sits in Barnet Gate or the centre of Well End, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Anywhere in Hertfordshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor means the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Well End

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody intends it. It mostly takes place at home, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Woodlands Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle. Near Kent Close, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Otherwise, in dim light outside Mops & Brooms, the vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new motor, a company car, or the other motor of a family with one of each fuels — the cars drivers know least. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same mistake, wherever in Well End or the rest of Hertfordshire you happen to be.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Well End?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Studio Way Woodland, say, or part way across Well End. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the Barnet Bypass, under 3 miles from Well End, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Well End to the car park by The Venue is one thing; heading for St Albans, under 10 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the motor has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it's caught quickly.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Well End

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Well End: a side street close to Cowley Hill Free Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, since those replies determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after the tank is emptied, right there. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Well End or in a bay at Elstree & Borehamwood. It is checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers head off. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Well End: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be honest. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price.
