AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Beechwood, like those in Wellington Hill, carry on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel. The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side behind one flap. At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Wellington Hill: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Whinmoor Gardens before work, or in the car park outside The Monkswood on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it. Monkswood or the heart of Wellington Hill: it is the same few seconds either way.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Sandhills or a forecourt in Wellington Hill, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Cross Gates.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, use this routine.

  • Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush by Kirkham Way on the verge.
  • Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start your car, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Leave out stage five altogether.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wellington Hill?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Euro Garages, Esso or another forecourt will usually help pushing the car clear if asked. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Wellington Hill.

Our arrival around Wellington Hill, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Whinmoor St Paul's Church of England Primary School, close to St. Paul or on your own drive. The replies settle the work and our quote, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. No one heads out until you've had the quote by phone.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol. After your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle gets tested. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
