AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wellsprings? Don't Start It
Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens until your motor pulls it round. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully rinsed where the car sits in Wellsprings. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
What to do right now, Wellsprings: AdBlue in your diesel tank
Do these:
- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
- Which fluid, and about what quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will know.
- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting TA2 7, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.
Things not to do:
- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your engine remains off.
- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is pointless.
- Even a short stretch down Crowcombe Road is too far to drive the car.
- No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.
The attendants on duty at any Wellsprings filling station — the Texaco included — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. On your own drive, don't move it at all.
What AdBlue does in a diesel tank
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.
It does not combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects below it — the same place the pickup draws from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Staplegrove overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.
Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches till it is removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle parked around Wellsprings. Only inside the tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content damages them in its own right.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse
Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Morrisons, and the issue is thinned fuel. No harm comes as long as it sits put, blended into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Priorswood or the middle of Wellsprings.
With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Wherever in Somerset the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Wellsprings
It is not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Mostly it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.
A few familiar ways account for most cases. Hurrying, outside Wellsprings Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up your car. Close to Bagborough Road, a driver pours a bottle in on the drive in the evening. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Fortune Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.
The least familiar cars get it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare car in a home with one of each fuels. Wherever you're around Wellsprings or the rest of Somerset, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.
Wellsprings: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.
You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Taunton Green or halfway across Wellsprings. Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.
On the M5, under 3 miles from Wellsprings, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.
How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Wellsprings to the car park by Wellsprings Chapel is a very different job from a run towards Wells, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.
What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Wellsprings
The vehicle remains put, whether that is a street near Brethen's Meeting Room, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Wellsprings, and our van comes to it. The work depends on three answers, and our engineers get first — what got in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.
On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own. A test of your car follows at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.
Clean diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the last step. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Taunton or on a driveway around Wellsprings. Before we leave, our engineers make sure it's running smoothly with clean diesel in. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Wellsprings and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area
Pyrland, Lyngford and Rowbarton are among the towns near Wellsprings that the same vans reach, along with most of Somerset further out, over the TA postcode area. Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.
Wellsprings is a small village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.
What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Wellsprings?
Because each callouts differ, a flat figure wouldn't be fair. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Taunton Vale Sports Club.
That's why every call from Wellsprings starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. Given them, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.
You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
