Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in West End

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition too. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in West End. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

West End, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so do not bin it out.
  • Give us a postcode starting MK45 4, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the motor stays off.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is pointless.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance along Pine Walk.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever West End forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station or any other. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the intake draws from. A motor filled on a driveway in Flitton overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a vehicle parked around West End. Only in the tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in West End

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Harvest Energy, and this problem is diluted fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether your car is in Water End or the heart of West End, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Anywhere across Bedfordshire your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in West End?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — can look the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Silsoe CofE VC Lower School the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Mandler Farm Road. Otherwise, in dim light by The Star and Garter, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company cars, and the other motor of a family with both fuel types. Keep it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever around West End or the remainder of Bedfordshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around West End, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

You may notice the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Silsoe Nature Reserve & Park or halfway across West End. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off rather than testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M1, under 5 miles from West End, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across West End to the car park by Saint James the Great is one thing; heading for Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. Caught soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

West End: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in West End — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road by Silsoe Community Sports Centre — our van travels to the car. What was put in, roughly the quantity, and if the engine has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, since those decide the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is emptied, on the spot. Residue from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol. A test of your car follows at the end, after fresh diesel is added and your filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, provided your motor hasn't run. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes at the end. You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around West End or in a bay by Flitwick. The check before we go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

About West End, briefly

West End is a suburban area in Bedfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 68 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. West End lies approximately 36.9 miles north of London and 14 miles southeast of Milton Keynes, near the villages of Silsoe and Hollington. West End is a relatively small community with a population of around 2412 residents. West End benefits from its rural setting while being close to urban centres.

AdBlue drains in West End and across Bedfordshire

Our vans that answer AdBlue call-outs in West End also cover the spots round it, Silsoe, Wardhedges and Hollington among them, and most of Bedfordshire beyond, across the MK postcode area. Near a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.

A van that comes to you suits West End, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, since our technicians drain it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

West End: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs vary, a single figure would not be fair. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Silsoe Village Hall.

Before a quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from West End opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran. Those replies shrink the range right down to a single number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
