West End: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Being water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; damage only starts once the pump starts pulling it. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle sits in West End. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around West End: the first few minutes
To do:
- Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- Which product, and about how much amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians can see.
- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting HU15 2, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.
Not to do:
- Moving your car even a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.
- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, so keep the car off.
- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
- Even a short distance down Pinfold is too far to drive the car.
- No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.
On a forecourt around West End, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.
What AdBlue does in a diesel tank
Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to travel through one.
Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's. It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ellerker last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.
It causes two kinds of damage from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. Lines holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a car parked around West End. Just in your tank, it stays stable. Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol
A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Blended into the diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; using the engine is the damage.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in North Cave or the middle of West End.
The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in East Riding of Yorkshire your vehicle sits.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around West End?
No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.
A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside South Cave Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School the top-up is hurried. Near West End, a driver tips a container in on that drive after work. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Bear.
It comes up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet motor, or the other motor of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers use least. Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in West End or the remainder of East Riding of Yorkshire you happen to be.
Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in West End?
Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and lines.
Maybe coming back from Moors Plantation, or midway across West End, the engine may go rough, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or stall. When you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to see. More of it is pulled through with each start.
Exit the M62, under 3 miles from West End, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.
Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, and so heading towards Kingston upon Hull, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing West End to the car park by All Saints’ Church. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.
There is more to clean out once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up. If it is caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in West End?
The vehicle remains put, whether that is a street beside All Saints' Church Hall, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in West End, and the van comes to it. What went in, about how much, plus if your engine has turned over: we check before all else, since those shape the job.
On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because residue won't flush out unaided. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.
Priming the system with new diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Broomfleet or on a driveway in West End. The check before our technicians go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. As the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across East Riding of Yorkshire, West End included
AdBlue call-outs in West End are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Westfield, Everthorpe as well as South Cave — and most of East Riding of Yorkshire further out, throughout HU postcodes. If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.
A mobile service fits West End, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring your vehicle to us, since our engineers empty it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.
What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around West End
Each job differs, and so not one fixed quote is honest. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Cave Castle Health Club.
That is why every call from West End starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run. Given them, the range narrows to one firm number.
The quote is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
In West End and still beside the vehicle?
Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car. Engine off, keys out, ignition off. Tell us it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, across West End or anywhere within East Riding of Yorkshire.
