Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wester Holytown

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble begins once it's sucked through your lines — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Wester Holytown. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Wester Holytown, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a ML4 1 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Moving the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Switching your key to ignition alone starts the pump running on many diesels. Skip it.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance up Remus Place is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Get the attendants to help you move your vehicle off the island if you're at a forecourt around Wester Holytown, whether it's the Morrisons or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same place the intake sucks from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in New Stevenston last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. A car left standing in Wester Holytown with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Wester Holytown

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco. Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; running your motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next tankful won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Wester Holytown or out in Hattonrigg, costs more than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in North Lanarkshire the car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Wester Holytown?

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody intends it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle. Close to Neptune Way, someone pours a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Derby Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels — the vehicles people use least. An identical mistake, same first response — keep it off — wherever you are around Wester Holytown or the remainder of North Lanarkshire.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wester Holytown?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from King Georges Field, perhaps, or part way across Wester Holytown. Once you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without restarting to see. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Wester Holytown lies under 3 miles from the M8; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Wester Holytown to the car park by Keir Hardie Sports Centre is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

Wester Holytown: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Wester Holytown: a side street near Wrangholm Kirk, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers shape the work, so first we ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush matters much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear out by itself. After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your car. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, if the motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The final step is to prime the system on new diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, by Holytown or on a driveway around Wester Holytown. It's checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Wester Holytown

Every job is different, and so no fixed price would be fair. What moves the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Holy Family.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Wester Holytown enquiry begins with exactly those, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. With them, a range narrows to one firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote by phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
