AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Westwood Gardens? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just starts when your pump starts drawing it. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where the car stands in Westwood Gardens. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Westwood Gardens, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

  • Remove your keys, which stops anyone turning the power on.
  • If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.
  • Give us a postcode starting CV5 6, or whatever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift the car.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's pointless.
  • Even a short distance along Ainsbury Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

The staff working at any Westwood Gardens filling station — the Esso among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. On that drive, the car stays just as it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Earlsdon last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight around Westwood Gardens makes it worse. Inside that tank only, time does nothing. The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Costco's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the main fault. Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside the tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it splits again — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Westwood Gardens or out in Whoberley, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Midlands your car is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westwood Gardens: how it ends up there

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside Earlsdon Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken in. After work, a container goes in on a driveway near Bott Road. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Phantom Coach, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least. Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere around Westwood Gardens or the remainder of West Midlands you happen to be.

Westwood Gardens: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — given any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Hearsall Golf Club or halfway across Westwood Gardens. No starting it again to test: stop when it is safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M6, under 10 miles from Westwood Gardens, by the first junction and stop safely, not driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so heading for Coventry, under 3 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Westwood Gardens to the car park by Parish Church of St Barbara, Earlsdon. Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's caught quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Westwood Gardens: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest in Westwood Gardens — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Beechwood Tennis Club — the van comes to your car. What was put in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has been run: we check before all else, because those shape the job.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. A test of your car follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, replaced. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes last. After that we start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Canley or a driveway in Westwood Gardens. Our technicians confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Westwood Gardens?

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure would not be fair. What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Kestrel.

Before a quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from Westwood Gardens opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran. When they are known, a range turns into one fixed number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
