Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wetheral Plain

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system pulls it in. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Wetheral Plain. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Wetheral Plain, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

  • Remove the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting CA4 8, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the engine remains off.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Elm Garth.
  • Emptying the tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

On a forecourt around Wetheral Plain, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push the car away from the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't blend. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its fuel from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Burnrigg yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches until it is cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow channels. Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle sitting around Wetheral Plain. Just in that tank, it stays the same. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have a problem of thin fuel. Blended through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; running your motor does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Wetheral Pasture or the middle of Wetheral Plain.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever in Cumbria your vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Wetheral Plain?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; many designs invite it. A bottle bought when heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside Great Corby School and Nursery, because the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped off. Near Greenacres, someone tips a bottle in on that drive after work. One more pattern: darkness, the car park outside Wheatsheaf, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet motor, or the other vehicle in a family with both fuel types — the vehicles drivers know least. Wherever around Cumbria, Wetheral Plain included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wetheral Plain?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Mirebank Wood or halfway across Wetheral Plain. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M6, under 3 miles from Wetheral Plain, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Wetheral Plain to the car park by Wetheral Bowling Club is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is caught early.

Wetheral Plain: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Wetheral Plain — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Wetheral Methodist Church — the van comes to your car. Three answers decide the job, so first our engineers ask what went in, roughly the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then your tank is cleared where the car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, your system is primed with new diesel. Then our engineers start it and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Wetheral or a drive around Wetheral Plain. It's checked on new diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers leave. No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Wetheral Plain: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single price would be fair, because each job is different. What moves the price is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Wetheral Cross.

Ahead of any figure, never after, every enquiry from Wetheral Plain opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran. With them, a range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As the van is on the way, check your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
