AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wheatcroft? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts when your pump starts pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Wheatcroft, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Wheatcroft, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a YO11 3 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Michael Mount Road.
  • Draining the tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Wheatcroft forecourt you are on, the BP or any other. On the drive, the car remains exactly as it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out. No part inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite different from fuel. It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. A vehicle topped up on a driveway in South Cliff yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. A car left sitting in Wheatcroft with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Esso. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it splits again — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Wheatcroft or out in Falsgrave, costs more than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in North Yorkshire the vehicle is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Wheatcroft?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs allow it. Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver buys a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Martin's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, Scarborough the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Filey Road. One more pattern: dim light, the car park by Poachers Barn, and someone using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Leave it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, wherever in Wheatcroft or the rest of North Yorkshire you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wheatcroft, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club, say, or part way across Wheatcroft. No starting it again to check: pull over when it is safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the Petuaria Way, under 50 miles from Wheatcroft, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Wheatcroft to the car park by St Michael's Youth Hall is one matter; driving for York, under 50 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Wheatcroft: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road beside St Mchael & All Angels, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Wheatcroft, and our van comes to it. The job rests on three replies, which we ask for before all else — what got in, the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is emptied, right there. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear away on its own. Testing the car comes at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped. Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, at Scarborough or on a driveway around Wheatcroft. Before we go, our technicians confirm it is running properly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wheatcroft: the cost of fixing it

Since each callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Former Location of Holbeck Hall Hotel.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Wheatcroft call opens with exactly those, before a quote, not after. When those are known, a range becomes a single firm number.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
