AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whickham? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once the pump begins drawing it. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Whickham. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Whickham: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we will know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting NE16 4, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to start your motor.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Church Chare.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any Whickham forecourt — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the intake sucks from. A motor topped up on a drive in Derwent Haugh yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once your motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. It eats at some metals found in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages. A car left standing in Whickham with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and this problem is thinned fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Dunston Hill or the middle of Whickham.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever across Tyne and Wear your car has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whickham: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. It mostly occurs at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. The top-up gets hurried outside Front Street Community Primary School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in. Near Rectory Lane, a driver tips a bottle in at home in the evening. Another version: darkness, a pub car park outside The Crown, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles get it the most — hire cars, new ones, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels. An identical slip, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Whickham or the rest of Tyne and Wear.

Whickham: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may see the engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Chase Park or halfway across Whickham. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Whickham lies under 5 miles from the Central Motorway East; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Whickham to the car park by St Mary the Virgin is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the car has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Whickham

The car remains where it is, whether that is a street beside Whickham Glebe Sports Club, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Whickham, and the van comes to it. Three answers shape the work, so first our technicians ask which fluid got in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through since residue won't flush away unaided. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, provided the engine has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the final step. You drive off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Whickham or in a space by Metrocentre. Before we leave, our technicians confirm it's running properly with new diesel in. No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Whickham and Tyne and Wear

AdBlue jobs in Whickham go to vans that serve the towns near it — Beechgrove, Swalwell as well as Axwell Park — and much of Tyne and Wear beyond, throughout NE postcodes. If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No moving is needed. In Whickham, a town, a mobile service works: your car is drained where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Whickham: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St. Mary.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Whickham enquiry begins by asking precisely those, ahead of a figure, not after. Those answers narrow the range right down to one figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. As the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.
