Whitchurch: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. In Whitchurch, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Whitchurch

Do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so don't throw it away.
  • Call just where you are. Say a CF14 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down St Francis Road.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Whitchurch forecourt you're on, the Tesco included. If you are on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Llandaff North last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — but it would be first through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning in Whitchurch makes things worse. Inside your tank only, time does nothing. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Whitchurch

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole fault. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Whether your vehicle sits in Rhiwbina or the centre of Whitchurch, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. Anywhere in Cardiff your vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Whitchurch

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Mostly it is never the filling station: a driver buys a container driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up your car. After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near Anton Court. One more version: darkness, a pub car park by Kegbelly, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It happens most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same mistake, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be in Whitchurch or the remainder of Cardiff.

Whitchurch: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Garden & Pond, perhaps, or part way across Whitchurch. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M4, under 3 miles from Whitchurch, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further in, so heading towards Cardiff, under 5 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Whitchurch to the car park by Whitchurch Tennis Club. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the car has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. When it is caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Whitchurch

A road beside Whitchurch Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest in Whitchurch, we come to it. Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, since those replies settle this work.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. What remains from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. A test of the car follows last, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where needed, replaced. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. At that point our technicians start the car and you set off, whether from a parking bay outside Whitchurch (Cardiff) or a drive in Whitchurch. Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running correctly with new diesel in. We do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue drains across Whitchurch and Cardiff

AdBlue jobs in Whitchurch go to teams that cover the places around it — Coryton, Birchgrove as well as Pantmawr — and much of Cardiff beyond, across CF postcodes. Ring and ask rather than guess when you are close to a border, or somewhere awkward to explain.

Whitchurch is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whitchurch: the cost of fixing it

Since each callouts differ, a single figure would not be honest. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Whitchurch Bowls Club.

With that reason, each call from Whitchurch opens with the identical trio — what was put in, how much, if it ran — before a figure. With those replies, a range shrinks to one firm figure.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
