AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Whitefield: What Now?

One thing matters most once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if the motor has run since. Over in Lily Hill or here in Whitefield, an unrun engine must stay that way. Switch nothing on, call 0333 366 0103, and expect a proper flush after a drain, carried out just where your vehicle sits around Whitefield. Already run? Stop once you safely can, then switch it off. It's a bigger job, though stage one does not change.

Below: the situations we meet, anywhere across Greater Manchester. Choose yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Whitefield forecourt

Only at this point, bottle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, there at the pump. Maybe you are at the Morrisons, possibly at the Esso, possibly somewhere else around Whitefield.

In short: there is no better spot to be to discover it. Just the tank holds AdBlue; no part beyond it has taken it in.

Do this: stay out of the car, even if the queue needs clearing. Have the staff to lend a hand pushing it to a bay, hold on to the receipt, then phone us from there. Our equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a live forecourt, so a car that can't be pushed clear gets cleared where it is at the petrol pump.

At home around Whitefield with AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dash had been warning you. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the driveway, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. It takes place on driveways just off Moss Lane as regularly as anywhere.

What it means: if you haven't driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of the tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.

Next: keys indoors, and so no one takes your vehicle off first thing. After that, ring. Your drive is where it gets drained, whether around Whitefield or Besses o th Barn. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Whitefield: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

Rough running, smoke, lost power or a glowing dashboard arrived a mile or two after the fill. Maybe it was on Pinfold Lane, maybe on the way out towards Salford, under 5 miles away.

Put simply: the AdBlue has been sucked through the fuel system. Mileage decides how deep it goes: filter and pipework to begin with, then the injection pump and each injector. Every restart, like every mile, carries it on.

Pull in safely — that is the first job — then turn everything off. On the M60, under a mile from Whitefield, that means the next junction, not the services further on. No test restarts: clearing itself isn't something AdBlue will do. Call us and say how far you went.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

You've had the car barely a week. On your own car, AdBlue is absent or elsewhere. On this one, the cap is just by your diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Any driver, anywhere across Greater Manchester, might do it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. Many hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on the car.

Sorting it before we arrives is quicker, and so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. Waiting for an answer in the car park outside Clifton, or near Stand Cricket Club? Keep your car off meanwhile.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whitefield?

Occasionally the fair answer is "I think so". Too light, the bottle; a trace of ammonia near your filler; no clear recollection of which cap. Sound familiar? A hurried stop by the gates of Higher Lane Primary School, or a call to a friend in Park Lane: either fits.

The point: your engine is not harmed by a little AdBlue splashed on the outside. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another matter. You can't tell which by turning the key, and doing so will suck in any AdBlue that is in that tank.

Next: assume it got in, then keep your motor off. Ring us and explain what you saw; we would rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Whitefield AdBlue drain

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Three questions are asked once we arrive — on a filling station, a driveway, a road by All Saints Church, Stand or the car park outside New Grove Inn: the liquid, the amount, and if the motor has been started. Your price comes on the call, before a van leaves, and the replies shape the work.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush — more vital with urea than after petrol, since crystals and corrosion won't clear by themselves, no matter how long you wait. Then comes your filter — cleaned, or replaced when needed — then fresh diesel, and a test of the car. Where your motor has not run, allow about half an hour once we arrive, for most cases.

The last step is starting it. Our test that it runs properly on new diesel comes before our technicians leave. Our technicians do the entire job where the vehicle is, and permanent damage is very unusual if it has been spotted quickly. For your insurer: an engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, no money in advance. It is worth knowing: many insurers include misfuelling cover, and so a quick look at your documents while you wait is worthwhile.
