Whiteholme: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Whiteholme. The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads about Whiteholme and Norbreck carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Whiteholme?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Warren Drive before work, or in the car park outside Golden Eagle on the way home.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Whiteholme or out in Anchorsholme.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Bispham or a forecourt around Whiteholme.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Poulton-Le-Fylde.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere across Lancashire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Broadhurst Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.
  • Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read it.
  • The two behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.
  • Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through the own spout.
  • Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there. Skip step five altogether.

Whiteholme: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so keep it off. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Esso or anywhere else. On your own drive in Whiteholme? Then the car remains where it is.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then switch off. The next junction is the place to leave when you're on the M55, under 10 miles from Whiteholme. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Whiteholme.

What occurs when our engineers get there around Whiteholme

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it outside Anchorsholme Primary Academy, near Sevenoaks Community Centre or at home, the van travels to it. Those answers decide this work and our price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run. You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Then our technicians start the engine and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
