AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Whitehough? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble just comes once the pump starts drawing it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where the vehicle sits around Whitehough. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Whitehough, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting SK23 6, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Switching the key to ignition alone starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short distance up Whitehough Head Lane is too far to drive it.
  • Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt around Whitehough, whether it's the EG On the Move or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the pump. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It does not blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Bridgeholm Green last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight around Whitehough leaves things worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Whitehough

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons. Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Higher Crossings or the centre of Whitehough alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, wherever your car has stopped around Derbyshire.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Whitehough?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts invite it. A container picked up when driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Chinley Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent refills your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off A6. Or someone new to that flap tops up the car after dark, parked in the car park outside Old Hall Inn.

It happens most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere around Derbyshire, Whitehough as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Whitehough?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may appear, maybe part way across Whitehough or coming back from Squirrel Green. Once you safely can, pull over and switch it off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M67, under 10 miles from Whitehough, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading for Manchester, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than hopping across Whitehough to the car park by Victory Hall. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Whitehough?

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a street near Chinley Community Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Whitehough, and the van comes to it. Three answers decide the job, so before anything else we ask what went in, roughly the amount, and if your engine has run.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. Testing the vehicle comes at the end, after clean diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, where needed, swapped. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last. Whether it is a parking space by Chinley or a driveway in Whitehough, that is where our technicians start the engine and you head off. The check before our engineers leave is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Whitehough

Not one single price would be fair, since every job differs. What changes the cost is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind WI Hall.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Whitehough opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
