Whitfield: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The harm starts once it's sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Whitfield. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Whitfield: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers can know.
  • Tell us a postcode starting SK13 8, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you directly — so call wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way up Ebenezer Street.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

The staff on duty at any Whitfield filling station — the Esso among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car filled on a driveway in Hobroyd overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. Overnight, a car parked in Whitfield with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just in your tank, it doesn't. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Whitfield

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have an issue of thin fuel. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of the diesel, so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Lower Dinting or the heart of Whitfield alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Derbyshire your car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Whitfield

Many vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. No one intends it. A bottle bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. Rushing, outside St Mary's Catholic Voluntary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. Someone tips the container in outside their house, just off Gladstone Street, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside Surrey Arms.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the spare car of a family with one of each fuel types — the vehicles people use the least. Wherever around Derbyshire, Whitfield as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Whitfield: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Harehills Park, perhaps, or part way across Whitfield. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M67, under 5 miles from Whitfield, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Manchester, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Whitfield to the car park by The Vineyard. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very rare when it's noticed quickly.

Whitfield: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Whitfield: a side street near St James, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether your engine has run, because those answers decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed right through since what remains will not flush out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it's a parking space outside Glossop or a driveway around Whitfield, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off. We check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Whitfield and Derbyshire

Whitfield Park, Glossop and Charlestown are among the towns near Whitfield that the same teams serve, along with much of Derbyshire beyond, throughout the SK postcode area. Assuming doesn't help by a border or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

Whitfield is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Whitfield

No flat price would be fair, since every job is different. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Glossop Indoor Market.

With that in mind, every call from Whitfield opens with the same trio — what was put in, how much, whether the engine ran — before a figure. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
