AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Whoberley: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Whoberley and Lower Eastern Green carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler on each tank. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. That gap is where the mistake lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Whoberley?

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Coral Close, or at Standard Triumph Recreation Club on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, carries on. Lime Tree Park or the middle of Whoberley: it is the same few seconds in both.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Westwood Gardens or a forecourt in Whoberley.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.
  • The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Canley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Midlands that is.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Broad Lane.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Whoberley already?

Short list, then. Top of it: the motor remains off. Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself runs the pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Costco, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Whoberley.

When the motor has run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off. Whoberley lies under 5 miles from the M6; on it, use the first junction. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Whoberley makes a smaller job than driving under 3 miles to Coventry — so tell us roughly how far it went.

Our arrival in Whoberley, and what happens next

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Coventry West Christadelphian Ecclesia, or outside Whoberley Hall Primary School. We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies settle this work and the quote. No one heads out before you've heard the price by phone.

Then that tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. That is why it matters more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Then our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs properly before we go.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after we are there. No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
