Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Willington

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off then leave the ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. The harm starts once it's pulled through your lines — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Willington, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has been run. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Willington: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a DL15 0 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Not to do:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Even a short way up High Street is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying the tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The attendants working at any Willington forecourt — the Shell among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite different from fuel. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from. A motor topped up on a driveway in Todhills yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the motor runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. A car left standing around Willington with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Willington

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and this problem is diluted fuel. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in that tank, it causes none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Newfield or the middle of Willington.

As with petrol, there is good news. Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just in your tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has come to rest around Durham.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Willington: how it ends up there

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A bottle bought while driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Rushing, outside Willington Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. Close to Park Street, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening. One more version: darkness, a pub car park by The Queen's Head, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, new ones, fleet cars, and the other car in a home with one of each fuels. Same slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Willington or the rest of Durham.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Willington?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may appear, perhaps part way across Willington or coming back from Willington AFC. Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the car off rather than testing it again. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the A1(M), under 10 miles from Willington, at the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Willington to park near Willington Library and a drive of under 10 miles towards Durham are very distinct jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Willington?

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Willington: a side street close to George B. McKean Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What went in, roughly the quantity, plus if your motor has turned over: we check before all else, since those shape the job.

Then your tank is cleared where the car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush matters much more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains won't wash out by itself. Testing the car follows last, once clean diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step. At that point our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Bishop Auckland or a driveway in Willington. It's tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our technicians go. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Willington and Durham

Sunnybrow, Helmington Row and Oakenshaw are among the towns near Willington that the same vans reach, along with most of Durham further out, over the DL postcode area. Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our engineers empty it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Willington, a riverside town, well.

Willington: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be fair. What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Willington Spiritualist Church.

What got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: every Willington call begins with exactly that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards. With them, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
