Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels around Newmarket, as well as Windsoredge, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Separate tanks, separate fillers. Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap. Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out. The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Windsoredge: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Windsoredge Lane, or heading home in the car park at The Green Man.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. It's seconds, be it out in Inchbrook or right in the centre of Windsoredge.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Windsoredge

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Windsoredge forecourt or a drive out in Egypt, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what belongs in each filler just there.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Stroud's car park, say — rather than once the warning comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever around Gloucestershire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Inchbrook Hill.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Don't carry on to step five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Windsoredge?

Short order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted. Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Esso or another — the staff will normally help roll your car clear, when you ask. On your own drive in Windsoredge? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. On the M5, under 10 miles from Windsoredge, that means the next junction. A short hop across Windsoredge is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

Windsoredge: what occurs when our technicians get there

By Nailsworth Church of England Primary School, close to Dunkirk Mill Museum or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it. Those answers determine the work and the price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run. You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Then our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
