Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wingates
AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until the engine sucks it round. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Wingates. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.
Wingates, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once
To do:
- Remove your keys, which stops someone switching the electrics on.
- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
- Which fluid, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our technicians will see.
- Call right where you are. Quote a BL5 3 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.
Do not do these:
- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the motor stays off.
- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.
- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is pointless.
- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Chorley Road.
- Beside the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.
The staff on duty at any Wingates forecourt — the Sainsbury's included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.
What AdBlue does in a diesel tank
The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.
It doesn't combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Cooper Turning last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.
It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it hits for as long as it stays there. A car left sitting around Wingates with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol
Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a fault of thin fuel. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, so watering it can't help. Hence the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other mistake — in Chew Moor or the centre of Wingates equally.
The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in Greater Manchester the vehicle sits.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Wingates
In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs invite it. A container picked up when heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual route.
Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside The Gates Primary School the refill is rushed. Near Manchester Road, someone tips a bottle in at home after work. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The White Horse Tavern, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.
The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet cars, and the other motor of a home with one of each fuel types. Keep it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Wingates or the rest of Greater Manchester you are.
Wingates: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?
The AdBlue has left that tank, then. With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed through the filter and lines.
Perhaps returning from the green space at the edge of the village, or part way across Wingates, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Every start pulls more of it through.
On the M61, under a mile from Wingates, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.
Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so driving towards Salford, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Wingates to the car park by The White Wall gallery & Framers. Let us know about how far it had come.
Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. If it is spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Wingates: what it takes
We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Wingates: a side street close to The Parish Church of St. John The Evangelist, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What was put in, roughly how much, plus if your engine has turned over: we ask first, since those shape the work.
The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is emptied, right there. Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided the motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.
Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Westhoughton or on a drive in Wingates. It's checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our engineers head off. No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wingates: the cost of fixing it
Not one single price would be honest, since every job is different. Three things shift the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Sacred Heart RC Church.
With that in mind, every call from Wingates opens by asking the identical trio — what went in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of any quote. Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.
Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
