AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Wingerworth? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Being water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump begins pulling it. In Wingerworth, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Wingerworth: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Remove your keys, which prevents someone turning the electrics on.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring just where you are. Say a S42 6 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Longedge Rise.
  • Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Wingerworth filling station — the Esso included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. A vehicle filled on a driveway in Tupton overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it gets to for as long as it remains there. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Wingerworth leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Wingerworth

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and this problem is diluted fuel. No damage is done as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue splits back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Grassmoor or the centre of Wingerworth equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Derbyshire the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Wingerworth

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The refill is hurried outside Hunloke Park Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped in. Near Church Close, someone pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Hunloke Arms, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, fleet cars, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Wherever you're in Wingerworth or the remainder of Derbyshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wingerworth?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been sucked through the filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might appear, maybe midway across Wingerworth or coming back from Wingerworth JSA. When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — with no restarting to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Wingerworth, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading towards Sheffield, under 15 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Wingerworth to the car park by Wingerworth Parish Hall. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it's spotted quickly.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Wingerworth: what it takes

The car stays where it is, whether that's a road beside St Pauls Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Wingerworth, and the van comes to it. The work rests on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — which fluid got in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the last step. Then we fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Chesterfield or a driveway around Wingerworth. Before we leave, we confirm it's running correctly with fresh diesel in. We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Wingerworth

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

That's why every call from Wingerworth starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
