AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Winstanley? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave the ignition off. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once the pump starts drawing it. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Winstanley. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Winstanley, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting WN3 6, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Don't:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Holmes House Avenue.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Winstanley forecourt you are on, the Sainsbury's or any other. At your own driveway, do not move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A motor filled on a drive in Spring Bank yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

After it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is cleared out. A motor left standing around Winstanley with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Winstanley

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the BP, and the issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside your tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Winstanley or out in Windy Arbour, costs more than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Greater Manchester the car is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Winstanley: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Aidan's Catholic Primary School, Wigan the top-up is hurried. After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Mendip Avenue. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car after dark, stopped in the car park by Poacher.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor of a family with both fuels. Anywhere in Greater Manchester, Winstanley as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Winstanley, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. Through your filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Perhaps returning from Barton's Wood, or midway across Winstanley, your motor might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than testing it again. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M6, under a mile from Winstanley, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Winstanley to the car park by St Matthew's C of E is a very different job from a run towards Liverpool, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's caught early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Winstanley?

A street by Clowes Methodist Church, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has stopped in Winstanley, our engineers come to it. Three replies decide the work, and so before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about what quantity, plus if the motor has turned over.

Next, emptying your tank right there removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains won't flush out unaided. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Pemberton or on a drive in Winstanley. Before we leave, our engineers check it is running smoothly with clean diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

Winstanley: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be honest. What moves the cost is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Pauls Church.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus if the engine ran: every Winstanley enquiry begins by asking precisely that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards. When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
