AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Wisbech: What Now?

All of it hinges on one fact: whether the engine has started after the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Anywhere your car stands — South Bridge Field, Wisbech — don't start an engine that hasn't been started yet. Ring 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and motor both off. In Wisbech, that is generally emptied and cleaned where it stands. Where your motor has run, stop somewhere safe straight away, then turn it off. A bigger job, yes, yet the same opening step.

Wisbech forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump

You're at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Perhaps you are at the BP, perhaps at the Michael Wicks Garage, possibly somewhere else around Wisbech.

Meaning? Finding out here is the best it gets. Just that tank holds AdBlue; no component beyond it has taken any in.

Next: resist the temptation to start it just to move away from the pump. Ask the staff to help you push the car into a parking bay, keep the receipt or the bottle, and call us from the forecourt. If it cannot be shifted, it can be drained at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Wisbech

Several days had gone by with the dash light on. A bottle from the garage, emptied in at the driveway — and it was just by the bin that the cap caught a second look. Drives near Church Terrace see it as much as any other street.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. On the bottom of the tank is exactly where AdBlue waits, because it won't blend with diesel — and a night going by changes nothing of the difference.

Your move: the keys in the house, and so nobody drives your vehicle anywhere first thing. After that, phone. Our technicians drain it on your driveway, whether that's around Wisbech or out in Great Boleness Field. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a residential street.

Wisbech: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Somewhere along Little Church Street or else on the road towards Peterborough — under 25 miles away.

The point: the system has drawn AdBlue through by now. It's been through your filter and the fuel lines and, the further you went, into your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Each restart, like each mile, carries it on.

Next: pick a safe spot, pull in, and turn the motor off. Service stations further along can wait: from the A1(M), under 25 miles out of Wisbech, take the first junction. No trial restarts: clearing isn't something AdBlue does. Call, saying how far your vehicle was driven.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

You've only had the vehicle a week. The AdBlue filler is right alongside the diesel one, which you did not know, since your own motor either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Anyone, anywhere across Cambridgeshire, could make the same.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more step. The owner often needs to sign off the work, under many rental and company agreements.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our engineers get there than after. If you are stranded in the car park outside March, or by St Peter & St Paul, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Not sure, around Wisbech

Sometimes the fair answer is "I think so". The bottle is lighter than it should be, there is a faint smell of ammonia about the filler, and you can't remember which cap you took off. The gates of The Nene Infant & Nursery School in a hurry, say, or someone's drive out in Leverington.

The upshot: your engine isn't hurt by some AdBlue splashed around the filler. Inside the diesel tank, by contrast, AdBlue harms it. If there is AdBlue in your tank, firing up the car would suck it in, and it would not tell you which either.

Your move: behave as though it did, and never start the engine. Describe what you noticed on the phone. A clear tank checked is a better result than an already-run one emptied.

What each AdBlue drain in Wisbech has in common

Every situation has the same opening to the work. Forecourt, driveway, The Globe's car park or a street by Wisbech & Fenland Museum — our van reaches the vehicle, and three answers come next: which fluid, what quantity, and whether it ran. Those replies settle this work, and you get the quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining your tank comes first, followed by a full flush — more vital with urea than with petrol, since crystals and corrosion won't go by themselves, no matter how long you wait. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there.

Starting the car comes last. Before our technicians go, it's checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel. We do the whole job where the car is, and long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
