AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels near Withymoor Village and Brierley Hill run, with diesel feeding your motor. Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. That gap is where the mistake lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Withymoor Village: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Fir Croft before work, or in the car park at The Roebuck on the way home.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Withymoor Village or out in Stambermill.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Stourbridge or a forecourt around Withymoor Village.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.
  • Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Lye, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever across West Midlands, follow this routine.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Palm Croft.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Both under a single flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using the built-in spout.
  • Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Withymoor Village?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Shell or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Withymoor Village.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. On the M5, under 5 miles from Withymoor Village, that means the next exit. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Withymoor Village makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Wolverhampton — so say roughly how far it went.

Withymoor Village: what happens when we arrive

By Peters Hill Primary School, near South Street Baptist Church or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our technicians ask. No one sets off until you have heard our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is emptied and the system flushed thoroughly. Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits. Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the car. The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. While we travel, have a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.
