Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodhouse Cliff

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and keep the ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The harm starts once it's pulled through your lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Woodhouse Cliff. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodhouse Cliff

Do these:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops anyone switching the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't bin it out.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a LS6 2 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not do these:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way along Back Montpelier Terrace.
  • By the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Woodhouse Cliff filling station — the Jet among them — will usually help rolling it aside if you ask. At your own drive, do not move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — entirely unlike fuel. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Miles Hill overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it will be first through once your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. Overnight, a vehicle parked around Woodhouse Cliff with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is only in that tank, it doesn't. Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Woodhouse Cliff

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have an issue of thin fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting inside that tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Woodhouse Carr or the heart of Woodhouse Cliff equally.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Yorkshire your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Woodhouse Cliff

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it. It mostly takes place at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Quarry Mount Primary School. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Ridge Mount. Or someone new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Hyde Park.

Rented cars, new motors, company motors, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it the most. Wherever you are in Woodhouse Cliff or the rest of West Yorkshire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Woodhouse Cliff: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the filter and lines.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Bedford Fields Commuinty Forest Garden, perhaps, or part way across Woodhouse Cliff. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the A58(M), under a mile from Woodhouse Cliff, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Woodhouse Cliff to the car park by WAT Buddharam Leeds is one thing; heading for Leeds, under 3 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been started. Long-term damage is very rare if it is caught soon.

Woodhouse Cliff: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Woodhouse Cliff: a side street near Marcelo Bielsa, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies decide the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly the amount, and whether your engine has run.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Woodhouse Cliff or in a bay at Burley Park. It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our engineers head off. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Woodhouse Cliff: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be fair. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Headingley Hill Congregational Church.

Before any quote, not after, every call from Woodhouse Cliff opens with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran. Their replies narrow the range right down to a single figure.

The quote is given on the call, before a van sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.
