AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodhouse? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off and keep your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the lines — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Woodhouse, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodhouse

Do these:

  • Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it away.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BD21 5, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Woodhouse Avenue.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Woodhouse forecourt — the Shell among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. On that drive, the vehicle stays just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. No part in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Knowle Park yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once your motor runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

After it is pulled in, the harm takes two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; and, since it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there. A motor left standing around Woodhouse with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a fault of thin fuel. No harm comes as long as it stays put, blended into your diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn. Crystals and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Holy Croft or the heart of Woodhouse alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across West Yorkshire the vehicle sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Woodhouse?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark. A bottle picked up while heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical story.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Joseph's Catholic Primary School. Someone tips the bottle in at home, right off Woodhouse Grove, as the day ends. Else, after dark outside Hope & Anchor, your car gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — hire cars, new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor of a home with both fuels. Wherever you are in Woodhouse or the remainder of West Yorkshire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Woodhouse?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Lower Kirkstall Wood or halfway across Woodhouse. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Woodhouse lies under 10 miles from the M606; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Woodhouse to the car park by Worth Valley Community Church is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's noticed early.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Woodhouse

Wherever it has come to rest around Woodhouse — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Museum of Rail Travel — our van travels to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, about the quantity, plus whether the engine has turned over: we ask first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if your motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The final step is to bleed the system on fresh diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Keighley or on a drive around Woodhouse. We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

Woodhouse: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts differ, a flat price would not be honest. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open drive is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Ingrow Loco Museum.

What got in, how much, plus if it ran: every Woodhouse call opens with exactly those, before any figure, not afterwards. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

The quote is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.
