Woodland Park: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off
AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle stands around Woodland Park. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.
Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodland Park
Things to do:
- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys out.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't throw it out.
- Give us a postcode starting LL19 9, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.
Things not to do:
- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it's wasted.
- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Bishopswood Road.
- Draining that tank yourself by the road is not one to try.
The staff working at any Woodland Park forecourt — the Tesco included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just where it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.
Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Tan-yr-allt last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.
It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. A car left sitting around Woodland Park with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.
AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol
Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Murco, and the problem is thinned fuel. Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running your engine is the damage.
With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits again — and the following fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Woodland Park or out in Bryniau, does more harm than almost any other slip.
With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Anywhere across Denbighshire the car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodland Park: how it ends up there
It is not deliberate. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. A bottle bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.
It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. Someone pours the container in outside their house, just off Hillside, as the day ends. Else, in dim light by Cross Foxes, the car gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.
It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a fleet motor, or the other motor of a family with both fuels — the vehicles drivers know the least. Wherever you are around Woodland Park or the remainder of Denbighshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.
Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Woodland Park?
The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through your filter and lines.
You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Hillside Gardens or halfway across Woodland Park. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.
Woodland Park lies under 15 miles from the Moreton Spur; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Woodland Park to the car park by Roman Helmet is a very different job from a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.
There's more to rinse out once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. When it is caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Woodland Park: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel
The car stays where it is, whether that's a road near Trinity Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Woodland Park, and the van comes to it. Which fluid was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has been run: we check first, because those decide the work.
Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your vehicle. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.
Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes last. You head off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Woodland Park or in a bay by Prestatyn. Before leaving, our engineers make sure it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in. Since the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Woodland Park: the cost of fixing it
Not one single price could be honest, because every job is different. Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Prestatyn Tennis Club.
That is why each call from Woodland Park starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run. Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.
Before a van sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
