AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Workington? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor sucks it round. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Workington. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Workington

Things to do:

  • Pocket the keys, which stops someone switching the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting CA14 2, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Oxford Street.
  • Beside the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Workington filling station — the Morrisons among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the intake sucks from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Barepot last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. A motor left standing in Workington with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Workington

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Asda. No damage comes as long as it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether your car sits in Moorclose or the centre of Workington, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Cumbria your car is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Workington: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside St Patrick's Catholic Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Murray Road. Another version: dim light, a pub car park by The Henry Bessemer, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types. Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — anywhere you are in Workington or the remainder of Cumbria.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Workington?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. It's been pulled through the filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Vulcan Park, say, or midway across Workington. No restarting to test: pull over when it is safe, then switch everything off. Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the Southwaite Services Northbound, under 50 miles from Workington, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Workington to park near Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre and a drive of under 50 miles towards Carlisle are very different jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the engine has run, and we do all of it where the car has stopped. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Workington

The car remains put, whether that's a street beside Workington Town Hall Community Hub, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt in Workington, and the van comes to it. Three answers decide the job, so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own. After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your car. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The final step is to prime your system on fresh diesel. You head off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Workington or in a bay by the nearest station. The test before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel. Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop. Afterwards, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Workington: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Three things move the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Clock.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Workington begins with the same trio — what got in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any figure. With them, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
