AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Wyberton Fen and Skirbeck Quarter run, with diesel for the motor. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side behind one flap. Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often. That gap is where the error lives.

Wyberton Fen: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Westbridge Road before work, or in the car park at The Hammer and Pincers on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started. Wyberton or the middle of Wyberton Fen: it is the same few seconds either way.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Wyberton Fen

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Wyberton Fen or a drive over in Boston. A few seconds, that's all.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
  • Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says where it lives when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Boston's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across Lincolnshire, use this routine.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Swineshead Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Before you start your car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Stage five stays off limits.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Wyberton Fen already?

Short order, then. First: your engine stays off. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Tesco or the Applegreen, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump. If you are on your own driveway in Wyberton Fen, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then turn off. The next exit is where to leave if you are on the A1(M), under 50 miles from Wyberton Fen. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Wyberton Fen is less work than a run of under 50 miles to Lincoln, so say.

Wyberton Fen: what occurs when we get there

Our van reaches your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Downtown, or outside Boston West Academy. Both the work and our price depend on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it has run — so we ask. You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then that tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away by itself. Hence it counts more. Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. The engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
