Wybourn: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Wybourn, is normally all it needs when found before your motor runs. Here before the event? In that case what follows explains why it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of modern diesels seen round Wybourn and Sheffield Park carry a second liquid as well. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler on every tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wybourn: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Manor Lane, or heading home in the car park outside The Woodbourne Hotel.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. Whether it takes place in Cricket Houses or the middle of Wybourn, it is the same few seconds.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Attercliffe or a forecourt around Wybourn, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Check as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Darnall's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is around South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

  • Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Manor Way.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Don't go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wybourn?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Costco, the Esso or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Wybourn.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Leave the M1 — under 3 miles out of Wybourn — at the next exit. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Wybourn.

Our arrival in Wybourn, and what occurs next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Fancy A Brew, or by Emmaus Catholic and CofE Primary School. Those replies determine the work and our price, and so our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run. You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it matters more. Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and finally the car is tested. The motor is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

With pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after we arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
