Wybunbury: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Wybunbury. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads round Wybunbury and Lea Forge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank has one filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Diesel gets filled on each forecourt call-out, again and again. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Wybunbury: how it occurs

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Kiln Lane before work, or in the car park outside Swan Inn on the way home.

New-to-you motors come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on. Clannor Heath or the middle of Wybunbury: it is the same few seconds either way.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Wybunbury or a drive over in Howbeck Bank. A few seconds, no more.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in each filler right there.
  • Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — at Nantwich's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are across Cheshire — a routine to follow.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Churchfields.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.
  • Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop. Skip step five altogether.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wybunbury?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive in Wybunbury? Then your car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. Wybunbury lies under 10 miles from the M6; on it, use the first junction. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Wybunbury is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles to Stoke-on-Trent, and so tell us.

When our engineers get there around Wybunbury, what happens?

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Wybunbury Methodist Chapel, or by Wybunbury Delves CofE Primary School. Both the work and our quote depend on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it's run — so our engineers ask. You get that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. That is why it counts more. Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your car gets tested. After that our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house. No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
