Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many current diesels driven around Wycombe Marsh and Sheepridge hold a second fluid as well. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs. That gap is where the error lives.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wycombe Marsh: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Mead Way before work, or in the car park outside The General Havelock heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. It's a few seconds, be it out in Micklefield or bang in the heart of Wycombe Marsh.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Wycombe Marsh forecourt or a drive out in High Wycombe, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from High Wycombe's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Buckinghamshire, follow this routine.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Victor Lay Place, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Don't carry on to step five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wycombe Marsh already?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things starts. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the JET or anywhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Wycombe Marsh.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off. On the M40, under a mile from Wycombe Marsh, that means the next junction. A short hop across Wycombe Marsh is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Wycombe Marsh: what occurs when our technicians turn up

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Former Papermill Site, or by Marsh School. Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies decide the work and our price. Nobody heads out until you've had the price by phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it clears away on its own, however long it is left. The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
