Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wyke: Why It Occurs
Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Around Wyke, finding it before your motor turns normally means draining and a thorough flush on the spot. The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers
Many current diesels on the roads about Wyke and Peacemarsh carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.
Each tank has one filler of its own. Many of motors have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which cap to use. It is in the gap that the mistake happens.
Wyke: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
On a driveway off Dry Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Buffalo on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.
The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a new car.
Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. It's seconds, be it out in Cold Harbour or bang in the centre of Wyke.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Wyke or a drive over in Gillingham. A few seconds, that's all.
- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.
- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Gillingham (Dorset)? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not once the light goes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
Wherever in Dorset the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.
- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Wyke Road.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.
- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
- Before you start the car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.
If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.
Wyke: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things starts. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump. Your own drive around Wyke is where it should stay.
Where your motor has run by now, stop safely and turn the car off. The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M5, under 50 miles from Wyke. A short hop across Wyke is a smaller job than a run towards Wells, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
When our engineers turn up in Wyke, what happens?
Anywhere your car came to rest, whether by Wyke Primary School, beside St George's or on your own drive, the van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies decide the work and price. Nobody sets off until you have had the price by phone.
Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. After that our technicians fire it up and check it runs properly before leaving.
Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
