AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Y-Ffrith: What Now?

One fact counts above all when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is if the motor has been started afterwards. Over in Bryniau or right in Y-Ffrith, an unstarted motor should stay unrun. Ring 0333 366 0103 with your key and motor still off. Across Y-Ffrith, such a case is generally emptied and flushed where it stands. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, but the first stage is the same.

Wherever in Denbighshire it took place, one of the situations below fits yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Y-Ffrith forecourt

Imagine it: standing by the petrol pump, gripping the nozzle, you realise the filler you opened wasn't the right one. It could be the Murco, or perhaps the Tesco, or a different station in Y-Ffrith.

The point: of all places to find out, this is the best. The AdBlue is in your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.

Freeing the pump is no reason to start it — so do not get back in. Have the attendants to help rolling it into a space, save the receipt, then ring us from there. The equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a live forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed away is drained where it is at the pump.

Y-Ffrith, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. A bottle from the garage, tipped in on the drive — and it was only at the bin that the cap caught your eye. It occurs on drives just off Brig Y Don as frequently as anywhere.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. On the floor of the tank is exactly where AdBlue stays, because it will not mix with diesel — and a night passing changes nothing of the difference.

Put your keys in the house overnight — otherwise someone may take it away at breakfast — and call us. Your drive is where it is emptied, whether in Y-Ffrith or Prestatyn. Night-time clears outside a house are no problem: the pumps are low-noise.

Y-Ffrith: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Maybe it was on Victoria Road West, perhaps on the way out towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away.

What it means: the system has sucked the AdBlue in. Distance sets how far it gets: filter and pipework first, then the injection pump and each injector. Each restart, like every mile, carries it on.

Next: pick a safe place, pull in, and switch your engine off. On the Moreton Spur, under 15 miles from Y-Ffrith, that means the next exit, not the services further on. It won't have cleared, so there is no point restarting to check. Phone us and say how far you travelled.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

Seven days back, it was unknown to you. Your own car either has no AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, so no one warned you the AdBlue inlet was just beside your diesel. Wherever you happen to be across Denbighshire, every driver can be caught.

Put simply: one extra step on top of the situations above, which turn on whether it has run. The owner frequently has to approve any work, under many rental and fleet agreements.

Do this: rental firm or fleet manager to begin with, us second, because sorting it beforehand saves time. Waiting for a reply in the car park outside Prestatyn, or beside Festival Gardens? Leave your car off throughout.

Y-Ffrith: unsure whether it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

At times the honest answer is "I think so". A faint ammonia smell lingers near your filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is hard to recall. It might have been at a friend's drive in Tan-yr-allt, or rushing outside the local primary school on the school run.

In short: a spill near your filler leaves the motor unharmed. Inside the diesel tank, by contrast, AdBlue damages it. Turning on your car won't tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will draw it in.

Assume it went in, and don't turn the key. Ring with the details: we would rather find a tank free of AdBlue than drain one once your motor has been run.

Each AdBlue drain around Y-Ffrith shares these steps

No matter the situation, a single start applies. Wherever the vehicle is — The Ffrith's car park, a road beside North Wales Bowling Centre, a driveway, a forecourt — the van arrives and we ask about the liquid, the quantity, and if your engine has been run. Those replies decide the work, and you get the quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Draining your tank comes next, then a careful flush — more vital after urea than after petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't clear on their own, no matter how long it sits. Then comes the fuel filter — flushed, or replaced where needed — followed by clean diesel, and a test of your vehicle. Where your motor has not been started, allow roughly half an hour on site, in most cases.

Finally, we start it. Our test that it runs properly on new diesel comes before our engineers head off. Our engineers do the whole job where the vehicle is, and permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling, and so look at yours as we head over.
