Abbey Meads: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Abbey Meads or the rest of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us and our team shall tell you what comes after that before you try any more.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never start the car — and never believe it if it does start. This is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel generally just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is wearing the fuel system while you drive.
- Turning the ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition off.
- Don't water down it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
- We'd sooner travel to an odd place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Thamesdown Drive, that means hazards on and keep it.
- Have your location ready before you phone. A postcode starting SN25 4 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
- Three facts determine your whole visit: the stuff you put in, the approximate quantity of it, and if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.
Nothing about the hours since has lost you anything. Fuel in a tank is dormant, so a diesel Renault Megane sitting outside Swindon this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew weakened diesel through your pump was the drive in. Call us before you go to collect the car.
Petrol in your BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Co-op Food, somewhere around Abbey Meads? Then ring us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to get out of the spot. Somebody comes to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are usually the simple cases.
A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in the Ford Focus sounds like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Abbey Meads Community Primary School, running late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.
Your Peugeot 3008 remains where it is in the car park outside The Abbey Mead for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work depends on those replies. The tank is emptied of the polluted mix, your lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With new diesel in and the system primed, your car is fired up and checked, and once it is running smoothly you set off.
Normal on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that's how the drive to Ash Meadow went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Audi A3 drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off then call us.
At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel
Forecourts are where the job mostly begins, and where a large chunk of that closes. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Asda that is normally where the drain takes place.
Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the one location this gets stopped. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines along with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Very much worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a start.
Can we cover your side of Abbey Meads?
The same runs carry us to Ash Brake, St Andrews Ridge, Blunsdon St Andrew, Groundwell and Hyde besides Abbey Meads, which is a residential suburb.
If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most towns in Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Call us to check rather than assuming, particularly when you are on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles with.
Check the map for the ground shown here. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to move to us.
Stuck at the kerbside anywhere around Abbey Meads?
Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge of Elstree Way, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.
Clear of the car when it is not wise to sit there, by it if it is. Never restart your motor to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. However awkward the place, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than pressing on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
This is where your M4 comes in, under 5 miles away from Abbey Meads. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

What our technicians do when our engineers get to you in Abbey Meads
- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
- Your tank gets emptied of it.
- What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so the lines get purged and the filter cleared.
- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
- We fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.
Abbey Meads AdBlue removal is a separate matter
If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — never start it — yet the problem is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.
AdBlue removal around Abbey Meads has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. We cover both.
Abbey Meads prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
What changes the price is listed below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians can't honestly put a single figure on this page.
- This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.
Abbey Meads motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Abbey Meads petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work happens. Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more frequently than people assume.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Waiting next to it?
The motor stays off.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect.
