Petrol in Diesel

Abbeydale Park: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they are, throughout Abbeydale Park and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Phone and then we can explain what comes next before you try anything else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. This is why you never fire it up, and why you never believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Flicking the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and we'd much rather come to a tricky place than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Brinkburn Vale Road, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts S17 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.
  • Three replies settle the full visit: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark quantity of it, plus whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

The work begins at the pump, typically. Quite often the job ends at one as well. Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere but a forecourt can this be caught with the engine still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key.

Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the assistance. Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Abbeydale Park

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at easy throttle pulls little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio somewhere in Abbeydale Park, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded outside Co-op Food — phone. Exiting the bay is not worth a restart. The tank gets emptied where it waits, the lines rinsed, new diesel in, and you head home.

You will be told to move the vehicle clear of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Dore Primary School, a wrongly fuelled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol through your filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Ring us.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it flows through, and petrol thins it. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains the ordinary Bushey Wood call: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires your fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and your engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Audi A3 left near Abbeydale Sports Club scarcely two streets on. Call us, and leave it off. A short distance does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Ford Kuga, a fill-up close to Totley Rise Methodist Church that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Coverage in Abbeydale Park

These same rounds carry us to Totley Rise, Bradway Bank, Totley Brook, Dore and New Totley as well as Abbeydale Park, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns in South Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Presuming is the thing to skip, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Phone to check.

Look at the map for the ground covered here. Every bit of it is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring the car anywhere.

Stuck by the roadside in Abbeydale Park

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop anywhere suitable. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Abbeydale Road South as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Clear of the vehicle while it's not safe to sit inside, beside it when it is. Never restart it to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into your fuel system. A technician driving to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it is much better for the car than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local M1 is the road that matters here, and runs under 10 miles from Abbeydale Park. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first junction that's safe, pull up there, and never restart the car to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring changes.

Where is Abbeydale Park?

Abbeydale Park is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Sheffield, near the River Sheaf in South Yorkshire. Abbeydale Park sits at an elevation of around 143 metres, with views of the surrounding countryside and nearby Totley Brook. Abbeydale Park is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting the area's residential nature. Abbeydale Park is located approximately 4.7 miles from Sheffield city centre, making it a popular choice for those who want to balance urban and rural living.

Once we get to you around Abbeydale Park: what we do

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians drain that tank of the polluted mixture.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Once it's started, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. We do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Abbeydale Park?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this problem under it's a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Abbeydale Park page. Both are ours to handle.

Abbeydale Park pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Abbeydale Park

At a petrol station in Abbeydale Park, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts locally regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable far more commonly than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your vehicle?

Don't switch the engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people assume, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.
