Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Aberfan? Don't Start It
Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Aberfan and the rest of Merthyr Tydfil. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us before anything else happens, and you'll know what follows next.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Don't fire it up. Started regardless? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Bridge Street? Hazards on, then keep it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.
- Before you phone, work out your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts CF48 4 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.
- What got in, about how many litres, and whether the engine has run — these three replies determine the whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
The high-pressure pump spent that morning drive running on a liquid that had shed a lot of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Volkswagen Passat, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting at Merthyr Vale until it dawns on you close to eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing our technicians ask is about mileage not time. Call us. Keep it just where it stands.
You'll be told to shift it out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside the local primary school, a wrongly fuelled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol through the filter on to the pump. Let them complain. Call us.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Aberfan Disaster Memorial Garden in that diesel Audi A3 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of that.
Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a misfuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to St Mary & The Holy Innocents or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better spot.
That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly, not your engine packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position usually get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Volvo XC60 now sitting near Aberfan Disaster Memorial Garden. Switch it off then call us.
Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?
It kicks off at the pump, generally. Quite often the job ends there too. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that's usually where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.
No place except the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still untouched. Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.
Attendants will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the help. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.
Aberfan and the villages next to it
As a village, Aberfan gets a regular visit, while the areas close by come with it on the same trip: Merthyr Vale and Troedyrhiw, Caegarw and Newtown, Mountain Ash.
There are pages for nearly all towns in Merthyr Tydfil, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing at all about whether our engineers come. On the border, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Ring us to enquire rather than guessing.
The patch this page covers sits on our map. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.
Stranded on the kerb anywhere in Aberfan?
The chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge of Heol Aberfan, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.
Clear of the car if it isn't sensible to sit inside, by it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: restart the car to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. A technician driving to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.
Petrol in a diesel, and your car has travelled
Here is where the local M4 comes in, under 15 miles away from Aberfan. A misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are generally a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.
Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Suppose the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

When we reach you around Aberfan: what happens
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
- The tainted mixture is drawn out of the tank.
- We flush the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what caused the issue.
- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- When it is turned on, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.
From there, you're ready to drive away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Aberfan?
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening step is unchanged — don't crank it — yet the issue is not. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
AdBlue removal in Aberfan has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. We cover both.
Aberfan costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what varies it:
- This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much the tank takes.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?
Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Aberfan
Fuel drains on a Aberfan petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this gets done. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
It is not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Standing next to it?
That engine stays off.
Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
