Petrol in a Diesel Car in Achlonan
Do not start the motor. While the petrol is still inside your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Achlonan and the remainder of Argyll and Bute, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Phone before all else happens, so you'll hear what comes next.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Never crank it. Turned on regardless? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that confused. It is not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be as well: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Our team would rather come to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort than a motor that hasn't moved. On the verge on Achnafearna, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.
- Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning PA35 1 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
- What got in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has started — these three facts determine the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive labouring on a fuel that had given up much of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting outside Taynuilt till the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the question our technicians ask you is about mileage rather than time. Ring us. Leave the car exactly where it is.
You set off at the end, once we have fired it up and checked it runs properly on fresh diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park outside the pub in the village, the contaminated fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our engineers get to the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.
None of that is the engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the normal A' Choille Bheag call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Audi A4 drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, the idle rough and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past clearances, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.
About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Ford Focus parked close to Church of the Visitation barely two streets on. Phone us, then leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning your lines instead of only clearing your tank.
Turn off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — close to Taynuilt Village Hall or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 telling you what's wrong.
Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt
A big chunk of the job ends up finished at the pump, because that is where it mostly kicks off. The drain generally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's permission, that is somewhere we work, and often.
The forecourt is the one spot this gets spotted before the motor has fired. We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.
The staff will normally offer to roll the vehicle away from the pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing. Firing it just for four car lengths? Don't.
Achlonan plus the areas beside it
Achlonan is a residential suburb, and so our vans are out to the town and to the places by it on the same rounds: Brochroy, Taynuilt, Ichrachan, Corfhouse and Airds Bay.
Our engineers still come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most towns in Argyll and Bute, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Contact us and enquire instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.
Check the map for the patch included on this page. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.
Achlonan: stuck wherever you pulled up
Not everyone gets the chance to stop somewhere suitable. A common call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Aldersyde or in a lay-by with your hazards going.
Stay by your car when it is wise to be inside, yet clear of the vehicle when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will bring our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.
So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles
This is where your M8 counts, under 50 miles from Achlonan. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything approaching the over 50 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Achlonan is a small coastal suburban area in Argyll and Bute, situated near the villages of Brochroy and Taynuilt. Achlonan has a low elevation of around 7 metres, reflecting its proximity to the sea. Achlonan is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, which is typical of many Scottish coastal communities. Achlonan is located some distance from major cities, with Stirling being the nearest at around 54 miles away.
What happens when our technicians arrive with you around Achlonan
- The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.
- The contaminated fuel comes from the tank.
- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what created the problem, so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The motor is turned on and checked to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.
After that it is ready to set off. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Achlonan is a different matter
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this fault beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.
Both are ours. There is a separate Achlonan page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Achlonan prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the price is listed below, because the job is not one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.
- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that proportion.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
- Whether a van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which rests on where the car is.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.
Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Achlonan
I'm on a forecourt around Achlonan. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the site's consent we attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more often than motorists assume.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It's not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.
Still with the car?
The motor remains off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the car stay that way. A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists expect.
