Petrol in Diesel

Acle: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Acle and the remainder of Norfolk. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Phone before all else begins, and you'll learn what happens from there.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up — and don't believe it if it fires up. Here is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those parts.
  • Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would much rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Old Road, put the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Before you phone, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting NR13 3 — that's what determines whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what was put in, about how many litres, and if the car has been started. Your replies settle all that comes after.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair part of the job ends up done at a pump, since that is where it usually starts. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that is a place we work, and routinely.

Before the engine has started — a forecourt is the one spot this is halted. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key settle how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the car stands.

Wheel it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Acle

Acle and the areas next to it

Damgate, Upton Green, Upton, Moulton St Mary, Tunstall — every one of them on our journeys that bring us over to Acle as well, a village.

There are pages for most places across Norfolk, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing about if our technicians come. Call us to enquire rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav can misread.

The ground this page includes sits on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers serve, and none of it asks the car to move to us.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Acle Church of England Primary Academy, you are late, and the receipt reads unleaded — and although three miles in the Audi A4 seems like nothing, fuel gets delivered on demand, and a rushed drive asks for plenty of that.

Your Mercedes C-Class remains where it is in the car park at The Kings Head Inn for the whole job, which typically goes like this. First our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since, because most of the work depends on those replies. That tank is emptied of the polluted mixture, the fuel lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With new diesel in and the fuel system bled, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it is running smoothly you set off.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision parts it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the entire process, and it accounts for the ordinary Oaks Meadow Play Area call: a diesel Dacia Duster that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. None of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

We flush the lines rather than only clearing your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already got to the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel BMW 5 Series parked up close to Acle Village Sign a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us then leave it off.

What occurs next is the trouble. The motor straight away draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put clean diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that advice is half true, because do it to a diesel Peugeot 2008 parked up, Acle Methodist Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take the filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, and that is the difference between the vehicle being fixed and the vehicle merely starting.

Acle: stranded where you parked

The chance to pull over somewhere suitable doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge of The Street, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you wait beside your car or step away from it rests on whether being in it seems wise. Never fire it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the fuel system. We will take our van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for your car that is much better than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M11 comes in — over 50 miles away from Acle. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Acle itself

Acle is a village situated on the River Bure in Norfolk, with a low elevation of around 7 metres above sea level. Acle lies near the villages of Damgate, Upton Green, and Upton, and is approximately 10.7 miles from Norwich. Acle has a population of around 1961 residents, predominantly living in detached housing. Acle is also located about 105.7 miles from London, making it a rural community in eastern England.

What follows when our engineers reach you in Acle

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Out flows the tainted mixture.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

That has the car ready to pull away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Acle?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Acle page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Acle?

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Acle

Fuel drains on a Acle petrol station forecourt

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes. We visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off. It is fixable a lot more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists expect.
