Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Addlestead?

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Addlestead or the rest of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone before anything else starts, and you will learn what happens after that.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not crank it. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you commonly prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would much rather come to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Tonbridge Road, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Before you phone, get your position. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning TN12 5 — that's what determines whether the van turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how much, plus if the motor has started. These three details determine the entire call-out.

Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

A big part of the work is finished at the pump, since that is where it often starts. If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where this drain takes place — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one spot this gets spotted. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines along with the tank. That's still not a calamity, and we deal with it where your car stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Well worth it. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Addlestead

Service in Addlestead

Those same rounds carry us to Snoll Hatch, Little Mill, The Pound, East Peckham and Peckham Bush along with Addlestead, which is a rural hamlet.

Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places in Kent, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Near the border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Phone to enquire instead of presuming.

The area this page covers appears on our map. The lot is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it won't run, so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the engine fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection your fuel is supposed to be giving. That is the snag, and it's why your diesel Vauxhall Astra will have felt completely ordinary coming back from East Peckham Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about, and so nothing alerts you. Phone us with about how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

Try the drive home from Man of Kent? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will pull away just fine, which is the trouble — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves generally whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Audi A6 and phone.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol thins diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the precision components that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Peugeot 208 drove, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how that trip to Wave Park went, then, and that tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later on. Then give us a call about the Citroen C4 Picasso, the diesel one, close to East Peckham Library. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — almost no one can two days into a vehicle, and it's something we establish on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Hyundai Tucson that made it close to Hop Farm Family Park needs the circuit cleared, not cleared.

Broken down on the kerbside near Addlestead

The chance to pull over somewhere suitable does not fall to everyone. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of Addlestead Road or in a lay-by with your hazards going.

Fine there? Remain beside it. Not okay? Climb out and away from it. Never start it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. We will take the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for your car that's much better than pressing on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The M26 is the one that counts here, and lies under 10 miles from Addlestead. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction then turn off. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

About Addlestead

Addlestead is a small hamlet situated on the riverside in Kent, with an elevation of around 15 metres. Addlestead lies near several other small settlements, including Snoll Hatch and Little Mill, and is characterized by its semi-detached housing. Addlestead is located within commuting distance of London, approximately 29.8 miles away, and is also close to the city of Southend-on-Sea. Addlestead has a population of around 598 people.

Once our engineers get to you in Addlestead: what follows

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
  • Your tank gets emptied of everything.
  • What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what caused the issue, and so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Addlestead?

Don't crank it: that opening rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Addlestead has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Addlestead

One price would not be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Addlestead motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Addlestead?

A good part of this work gets done there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's permission we attend Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It's fixable a lot more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the vehicle?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
