Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Adfa? Don't Start It
Do not fire up the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Adfa and the remainder of Powys, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our team shall tell you what your next step will be. Contact us — that goes before anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Don't fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run, so the person stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be too: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
- Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so never tip diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Meillionydd, anywhere — a difficult location for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
- Have your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts SY16 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and a van circling.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what went in, about how many litres, plus if the car has been started. Your responses decide whatever follows.
Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt
Pumps are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a fair part of that finishes. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is usually where this drain happens.
Nowhere but the forecourt can this be halted with the engine still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key.
Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Well worth doing. Cranking the car for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.
Simple, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at gentle throttle uses hardly any diesel. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere around Adfa, a boot packed with shopping, and you stranded outside Spar — ring us. Exiting that spot is not worth a restart. Your tank gets drained where it stands, the lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and you get home.
A passer-by will tell you to move it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the lines and drags more petrol past the fuel filter and into the pump. Stay put, let people grumble, then phone us.
Three things help when you call from close to Cwm Llanllugan Community Centre: which side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, so the location itself is hardly ever the trouble — we'd far rather deal with a cramped parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain the Audi Q5, change the fuel filter where there's a serviceable one, flush the fuel lines and put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, because by this point the worst of it is resting in your lines instead of in the tank.
Clattering, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That's a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Fiesta telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near St. Cynon or anywhere else, and do not restart the vehicle to find a better location.
By now your tank is the least of it. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into your filter, into your lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Citroen C4 Picasso that got close to The Hand wants its circuit purged. Emptying is not the same thing.
Will our technicians serve your corner of Adfa?
Pant, Llanllugan, Dwyrhiw, Cefn Coch, Llanwyddelan — each of these on the rounds that take us out to Adfa itself, a rural village.
If yours is not on this list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Powys, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours. Close to a border, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Contact us and enquire instead of presuming.
This map shows the ground the page spans. The lot is ground our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring the vehicle anywhere.
Roadside stops across Adfa
Not everybody has a suitable place to pull over. A common call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge on Pont Ystrad or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.
Remain by the vehicle if it's wise to be in it, but clear of it if it isn't. Do not start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that blend further into the system. However difficult the spot, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 50 miles from Adfa, the local M54 is what matters now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in our van.
Adfa itself
Adfa is a small village in Powys, situated inland at an elevation of 245 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Adfa lies near the villages of Pant, Llanllugan, and Dwyrhiw, and is approximately 35 miles from Wrexham. Adfa has a population of around 558 people, and is located in a rural area of Wales. Adfa is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 158 miles.
When our technicians arrive with you around Adfa: what we do
- We check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
- Our engineers clear your tank of all the contaminated mixture.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the problem.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- After it's fired up, we check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That has your car ready to set off. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Adfa is a different matter
The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.
AdBlue removal around Adfa has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more significant of the two. We cover both.
Adfa costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What changes the price is listed below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.
- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank holds.
- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.
Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Adfa drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Adfa petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. We attend Mobil and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been sucked through the system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving moves the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Still with your vehicle?
Your engine stays off.
Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect.
