Petrol in a Diesel Car in Airthrey Castle

With the tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Across Airthrey Castle and the remainder of Stirling, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us before all else happens, and you'll hear what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, never believe it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Hillfoots Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky location works for us better than a started motor.
  • Our van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting FK9 4, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you phone.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, approximately how much, plus if your car has started. Those three details determine the whole job.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on the forecourt?

Most of this work starts at a forecourt, so a big chunk of that is finished there. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that's generally where the drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the single location the mistake is halted. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Firing it just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Airthrey Castle

Airthrey Castle plus the villages next to it

Blairlogie, Craigmill, Causewayhead, Manor Powis, Cornton — every one of them on the rounds that take us over to Airthrey Castle itself, a neighbourhood.

Our technicians still come. The names above are just the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations in Stirling, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to the boundary, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us and ask instead of presuming.

The ground the page spans is on the map. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Airthrey Castle: broken down where you parked

Not everybody gets a sensible spot to pull in. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge beside A91 or at a lay-by with your hazards going.

Whether you wait with the motor or move clear of it depends on if being nearby is sensible. Do not fire it up to get to a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the system. We will take the van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

What we will ask is if the run there was brief and cold, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that won't burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Ford Focus parked in the car park by The Studio with a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens while it sits, so leave the car overnight and phone us in the morning.

None of it is the motor failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary University of Stirling - Airthrey Golf Club call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once the fuel is put right.

The pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off moves onward with your fuel — which is why we are direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel Audi A3 where it is by Garden of Time Memorial.

Switch off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — close to Logie Kirk or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.

Somebody certain will tell you to drain the vehicle then put new diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Volvo XC60 close to McRobert and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the problem: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through the pump once more. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. Your circuit gets purged, the filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that simply starts.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where the local M9 matters, under 3 miles out of Airthrey Castle. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Never restart it to move it. Pull off at the first safe junction and switch off. It affects what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

A little about Airthrey Castle

Airthrey Castle is a locality situated on the shores of a lake, with Airthrey Castle being close to the city of Stirling and the nearby settlements of Blairlogie and Causewayhead. Airthrey Castle has a relatively low elevation of 34 metres above sea level, and Airthrey Castle is characterized by predominantly flat-type housing. Airthrey Castle is located approximately 355 miles northwest of London, with Airthrey Castle being part of the wider Stirling urban area.

When we get to you around Airthrey Castle: what we do

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The polluted mixture comes out of that tank.
  • Our technicians clean the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, so what is left in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Airthrey Castle

Never fire it up: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits in its place.

AdBlue removal around Airthrey Castle has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Airthrey Castle

We cannot put one price on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank takes.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Airthrey Castle drivers

At a petrol station around Airthrey Castle, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more often than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

Keep the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
