Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Aldbrough?

Don't start the engine. While the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not yet run, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that's decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Aldbrough and the rest of East Riding of Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our team will explain what the following move will be. Contact us — this happens ahead of all else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That is why you don't crank it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: turning it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those parts.
  • Never pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up clears nothing — it just leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Church Street? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A difficult place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Keep your location ready before you call. A postcode beginning HU11 4 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, roughly how much, and if your car has been turned over. The replies determine everything that follows.

At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A large portion of this work gets done at a pump, as that's where it mostly starts. Still at Pace? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with the engine never run, and no place else does it. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car sits.

Move it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Aldbrough

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the phone call our engineers hope for goes like this: diesel Nissan Qashqai, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now turned off outside Tesco.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a hurried morning run needs plenty — so three miles in the Mercedes E-Class seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine by Aldbrough Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand reading unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone.

Out there happy, back sluggish. If that was the run to Fox Covert, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Ford Kuga covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Citroen C3 close to Garton Methodist Chapel. You will not know how full that tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. We ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why cars in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Volvo XC60 is now sitting near St. Peter's Humbleton. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure fully rather than an engine giving up. Turn off. Phone us.

Aldbrough and the areas next to it

Those same runs bring us to Flinton, Great Cowden, Garton, Fitling and Humbleton along with Aldbrough, which is a coastal village.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and the majority of towns around East Riding of Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Guessing is the habit to resist, especially on the border or anywhere the satnav fails. Phone and check.

That map outlines the patch this page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers serve, and none of it requires your car to travel to us.

Kerbside breakdowns around Aldbrough

Some drivers find no sensible spot to pull over at all. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Cross Street since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Fine there? Sit with it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it. Do not fire up the motor to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

The M180 is the one that counts now, and it sits under 25 miles from Aldbrough. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and do not start it to move it. It affects what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

A little about Aldbrough

Aldbrough is a small coastal village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, situated near the towns of Flinton and Great Cowden. Aldbrough lies at a low elevation of around 17 metres, close to the eastern coast of England. Aldbrough has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent. Aldbrough is located approximately 10 miles from Kingston upon Hull, making it a commuter option for those working in the city.

What happens when our engineers reach you around Aldbrough

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • After it is fired up, our technicians check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Aldbrough

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the fault beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Aldbrough page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Aldbrough?

We cannot put one price on this page frankly, because the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much your tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for our van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Aldbrough drivers

Fuel drains on a Aldbrough petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent our technicians visit Murco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It's salvageable a lot more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Waiting next to it?

Do not switch the car on again.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
